Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The Governors Highway Safety Association reports that pedestrian fatalities reached a record high of 7,485 in 2021. This was the highest total in more than 40 years.

As of 2020, the percentage of pedestrians killed due to speeding has climbed from 7.2% to 8.6%. The rate of travel harms the safety of pedestrians. Once a car approaches 58 miles per hour in speed, the risk of death for pedestrians dramatically increases, reaching 90%.

In 2016, 5,937 pedestrians lost their lives due to accidents in the United States. It was anticipated that there would be 88 deaths every minute between now and the end of the year. In 2017, it was expected that 137,000 people would be injured while walking and seek medical assistance for their conditions.

In California, pedestrians are more likely to die or be injured in accidents. In 2012, there were around 14,000 pedestrians hurt, and 893 pedestrians died.

Pedestrians must maintain their position on designated sidewalks, abstain from using drugs and alcohol, and proceed with extreme caution when traversing parking lots and driveways. If they take this advice, there is a far lesser likelihood that they may sustain injuries in the event of an accident.
