Plane Crash Statistics

Although flying is faster and safer than driving or riding the train, plane accidents are common and can kill or badly injure those on board. There are numerous reasons why planes crash rather than just falling to the ground. These include issues such as poor repair and maintenance and pilot error.

There were 1,347 civilian aviation accidents in the United States in 2018. There were 1,302 accidents in 2019. Last year, around 395 fewer persons perished in civil aviation than this year.

In 2019, only eight individuals died. Every one of the 452 persons who died in 2019 died aboard a boat. Four persons were killed in an aviation disaster.

Plane crashes are typically caused by pilot error, corporate negligence, violations of Federal Aviation Administration standards, and mechanical issues, but other factors can also cause them.
