Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bicyclists are what the law refers to as “vulnerable road users,” or those who are most likely to be injured in an accident. Even while wearing bicycle helmets, riders can receive serious and life-threatening injuries in car collisions. Broken bones, road rash, head, and brain injuries, crush injuries, and internal organ damage are all common bike accident injuries.

Unfortunately, bicycle accidents are all too common. According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration, around 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle incidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of traffic fatalities.

According to US News & World Report, 17 cyclists were killed on Los Angeles roadways in 2015, whereas 21 were killed in 2018. This is an almost 25% increase. Pedestrian fatalities climbed by more than 50% during the same period.

Numerous road infrastructures in Los Angeles lead to bicycle accidents. New technology, such as rideshare services and electric scooters, has resulted in new road users and more perplexing traffic and parking patterns.
