What To Do After a Scooter Accident

No one can predict a scooter accident, but you can prepare for one. Knowing what to do can help you stay calm and organized after a scooter crash. It can tell you what to do, what not to do, and how best to protect your rights. You aren’t alone after a serious collision. Whether you are the injured victim or the family of a killed loved one, here’s what to do after a scooter accident:

  1. Stay Calm – Stay on the scene and check yourself. Remain calm and don’t admit fault.
  2. Get to a safe place – If you are able to do so, move to the side of the road or find somewhere safe to wait for the police to arrive.
  3. Call 911 – Call the police to report your accident. Unless your crash was minor, without any injuries or property damage, you should call the cops. Authorities can record the incident, gather information, and make it part of an official document.
  4. Exchange information – Gather names, telephone numbers, and insurance information of those involved in the accident. If possible, take photographs of the vehicles, license plates, and other vital details.
  5. Don’t admit fault – Stick only to what occurred when talking with a police officer. Be as detailed as possible in your description of the collision.
  6. Seek medical attention – Immediately visit the hospital or your primary doctor. Immediate medical care can decrease the damage you suffer from injuries. Tests can identify internal injuries that may not show symptoms.
  7. Create a file – Maintain accident-related files together and organize them. Your file should have a copy of the police report, medical bills, the other driver’s information, injury treatment programs, and any other files you have collected about the incident.

Scooter Accident Statistics

A UCLA study found that electric scooter riders in one Los Angeles neighborhood had higher injury rates than motorcycle, bicycle, car, and pedestrian riders over the past six years. More than 1,354 injured people were treated at UCLA Health’s emergency departments and urgent care centers, which covered a longer period of time—January 1, 2014 through May 14, 2020. This allows them to compare data before and after e-scooters were introduced.

Injuries sustained by users of e-scooters continued to increase year-over-year, increasing by 22% in 2022 compared to 2021. In the period between 2017 and 2022, about half (46%) of the estimated injuries caused by e-bikes were reported to have occurred in the year 2022 alone. Hoverboard injuries declined by 26% between 2021 and 2022, despite the upward trend.

Los Angeles had approximately 1,454 pedestrian-related fatalities and injuries in 2022, based on the data provided by the Transportation Injury Mapping System.
