Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

The US Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) reports that 5,014 motorcyclists lost their lives in collisions in 2019 alone. Since the early 1980s, the number of motorcycle fatalities had decreased, but this trend reversed in 1998 and continued until 2008.

Motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to die in a crash than automobile passengers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data.

Nearly 70% of motorcycle accidents occur at junctions due to motorists failing to see the motorcycle in front of them. Other motorists frequently underestimate a biker’s speed due to the tiny size of motorbikes, resulting in an accident.

The state of California has the most motorcycles registered in the United States. In California, there are more than 800,000 legally registered motorcycles. More than 15,000 people were injured, and more than 500 people were killed on California’s roads in 2017 in motorcycle accidents.

Motorcyclists are frequently injured or killed due to various negligent or irresponsible behaviors on the road, including driving while distracted, speeding, intoxicated or reckless, failing to respect traffic laws, and more.
