Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Statistics

The number of people killed or injured in car accidents in the United States has risen dramatically over the years. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), an estimated 38,000 individuals died in motor vehicle accidents in the United States in 2019.

In 2019, 15,359 people were killed or wounded in car accidents in California, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety (the most recent data available). Alcohol was a factor in the injury or death of 1,794 individuals, while speed was a factor in 3,592 collisions. Around 370 bicyclists were hurt or killed in a collision with another vehicle, and 564 pedestrians were injured or killed.

Even though there is a large traffic in some regions, Southern California’s streets are stunning and expansive. The open freeways in Riverside County sometimes encourage cars to go at high speeds, occasionally resulting in major car accidents.

In 2017, Riverside alone recorded 2,119 injuries and deaths from motor vehicle accidents on surface streets, including Jurupa Avenue, Wells Avenue, Pierce Street, and, more commonly, neighboring freeways like the 91, 215, and 60. These tragedies are exacerbated by the fact that most of them might have been avoided; about 80% of all traffic collisions are caused by distracted driving behavior.
