Fatal Bicycle Crash Statistics

Riding a bicycle on the road can be risky and, in rare cases, fatal, especially in congested regions. According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration, 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle incidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of traffic fatalities.

In recent years, there have been 13 road deaths and 1,315 injuries in Orange County bicycle incidents, according to the California Highway Patrol.

When a bicycle collides with a vehicle, the vehicle’s driver will almost always come out unscathed. Bicyclists are what the law refers to as “vulnerable road users,” or those who are most likely to be injured in an accident. Even while wearing bicycle helmets, riders can receive serious and life-threatening injuries in car collisions.

Drivers failing to cede the right of way, running a stop sign or red light, not paying enough attention to the road, and texting while driving are common causes of bicycle accidents. Drunk or careless driving might potentially result in a tragic bicycle crash.
