A 36-year-old male pedestrian was killed after being struck by a pickup truck in Sonoma on Monday evening, January 16, 2023.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. at the Verano Avenue and Highway 12 intersection.
The man from Santa Rosa was reportedly walking in the crosswalk at the intersection when 24-year-old Alvaro A. of Sonoma, driving west on Verano Ave. in a 2019 Toyota Tundra, turned south on Highway 12 and struck him.
Responders from the Sonoma Valley Fire Department attended to the injured pedestrian. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his wounds and was declared dead at the scene. His identity was withheld until the next of kin was notified.
The driver stayed put at the scene as the authorities investigated the crash. Speeding, alcohol, or drugs were not believed to play a part in the deadly collision.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
From years 2007 to 2016, the total number of people killed in traffic-related accidents fell by 14%, according to data published by the Governors Highway Safety Association. Throughout this period, however, the number of pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent, which is a tragic development.
The foregoing statistics project grim prospects for pedestrians in the United States in the years ahead, with many possibly suffering life-altering injuries or even death as a result of being struck by a motor vehicle.
There were 809 fatalities and 14,000 injuries attributable to automobile accidents in 2012. It appears that pedestrian accidents, both fatal and otherwise, are more prevalent in California than in the rest of the country.
According to statistics, there were roughly 6,000 persons killed in automobile accidents in 2016. By year’s end, the average death rate had risen to almost 88 per minute. Nearly 137,000 Americans were taken to hospitals after suffering serious injuries.
