Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big rigs are the massive trucks that clog our highways and are also known as 18-wheelers, tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, dump trucks, and semis.

Accidents involving large trucks are typically among the most dangerous types of accidents. Because of their size and weight, these trucks have the potential to cause significant property damage, injuries, and even death.

Big rigs are involved in some of the most deadly accidents on our roads. While the average car weighs around 4,000 pounds, a large rig can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. This massive size disparity can result in serious and often fatal accidents.

According to data from the United States Department of Transportation, nearly 4,000 people were killed in tractor-trailer accidents in the United States in 2015. From 2009 to 2015, the number of semi-truck accident fatalities increased by a whopping 22%. In 2015, a tractor-trailer was involved in 11% of all traffic fatalities.

California has one of the highest rates of truck accidents in the country. In 2019, there were 3,316 fatal crashes, with 3,606 people killed. There were 320 fatal large truck crashes, with 44 of those fatalities being truck occupants.

A variety of factors causes large truck accidents. Professional truck drivers are frequently under pressure to complete their deliveries as quickly as possible, and they must adhere to strict deadlines. As a result, they are forced to cut corners regarding federal regulations and safety. A tired or inattentive truck driver behind the wheel of a vehicle that weighs 20 times more than the other vehicles on the road is a recipe for disaster.
