Head-On Collision Statistics

The term “head-on collision” refers to an accident wherein the two cars going in opposite directions collide directly. The consequences of these collisions, even at lower speeds, can be life-threatening or fatal.

In head-on collisions, both drivers are subjected to a significant amount of force, which makes them among the most deadly types of wrecks. In contrast to most collisions, head-on crashes occur as the two vehicles are heading toward one another.

Even though head-on collisions account for only 2% of all collisions, more than 10% of all traffic fatalities are caused by them.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, fifty-eight percent of car occupants were killed in frontal impact crashes in 2017. One-third of all fatal crashes in rural areas involve a head-on collision. Fewer than 7% of fatal crashes in metropolitan areas are head-on collisions.

Distracted driving, speeding, mechanical failure, and reckless driving are common causes of head-on collisions.
