One driver was arrested after a suspected DUI collision that injured two women in San Bernardino early Sunday morning, January 22, 2023.
The crash reportedly occurred around 2:13 a.m. on northbound I-215, just before the 5th Street exit.
Authorities responded to calls and found that a male motorist in a black Dodge Challenger collided with a white Mercedes-Benz GLA-type SUV carrying two female occupants.
The collision caused the Mercedes to overturn, causing significant damage.
One of the two females could exit the vehicle, while the other was trapped and had to be extricated.
Meanwhile, the other vehicle had extensive damage, including three entirely shredded tires and rims.
Rescuers requested at least two ambulances to arrive at the spot. The two victims were taken to a local hospital by ground ambulance with unknown injuries.
The male driver was only slightly injured. At the scene, he was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
DUI Collision Statistics
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that approximately 32 people die in drunk driving accidents in the United States each day, or one every 45 minutes.
Drunk driving caused 11,654 traffic deaths in 2020, an increase of 14% from 2019.
Compared to 2016, alcohol-related collision deaths increased by 5.8% in 2017, according to the California DUI Management Information System.
Driving under the influence of alcohol poses a danger to drivers, other road users, and the environment. Intoxicated drivers waste approximately two billion gallons of fuel each year due to irresponsible driving.
Given these data, it is evident that everyone should keep a close eye on drinking habits and avoid driving after drinking too much.
