What To Do After A Car Accident

Car accidents can happen to anyone so suddenly and leave them overwhelmed. To protect your safety and legal rights to compensation, you must take the following steps if you are still able to after a car crash:

  • Prioritize Safety — If you can do so, move your car to the side of the road away from traffic. Alert other motorists by switching on your hazard lights while waiting for the police.
  • Stay Calm — Be composed and attentive. Check for any injuries. When talking with the other people involved, avoid apologizing or accepting blame for the crash.
  • Notify The Authorities — Call 911 and report the collision to the police. They will make an official report detailing the accident, which you can use to bolster your claim later.
  • Gather Information — Exchange information with the other party and share names, contact details, and insurance information. Take pictures of the cars involved, as well as any damage, license plates, and your injuries.
  • Don’t Take Responsibility — Give the authorities a thorough explanation of the crash, but be careful not to say anything that could be interpreted as an admission of fault.
  • Seek Prompt Medical Care — Seek medical attention as soon as possible, regardless of how minor you think your injuries are. Some symptoms might not show up straight away. You will also need medical records to support your claim.
  • Inform Your Insurance Provider — Inform your insurance company about the crash. Follow their instructions on how to report the crash properly.
  • Avoid Dealing With Insurance Adjusters Alone — If the other party’s insurance adjuster calls you, provide them with only the basic information. Do not accept an offer, make a recorded statement, or sign anything without acquiring legal counsel first.
  • Keep Evidence Well-Documented — Make sure all relevant evidence, including the police report, medical bills, the other driver’s information, and medical records, are secured.
  • Call (888) 488-1391 — In bringing a personal injury claim, our top-rated California car accident attorneys can evaluate the viability of your case, negotiate with insurance companies, and offer you legal counsel throughout the claims process.
