Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

Semi-trucks play a critical role in the economy. Moving billions of dollars worth of goods every year is a huge job for the trucking business in the United States. Unfortunately, there are many big rigs on the highways, which can be dangerous to other motorists.

Semi-truck collisions are more dangerous than other types of collisions on the road. It’s largely because big rig trucks are so large compared to other vehicles on the road.

Since 2009, the fatality rate for large rig trucks has increased by 30%. This is according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Big rigs were responsible for 4,102 road deaths in 2017.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), truck crashes resulted in the injuries of 6,897 persons and the deaths of 327 people in 2017.

Loss of control of the truck, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, as well as driver fatigue are all factors that contribute to semi-truck accidents.
