Head-On Crash Statistics

The California Office of Traffic Safety is one of several organizations that collect statistics on California’s auto crashes. The most recent year for which statistics are available is 2018. There were 8.3 percent fewer road deaths statewide than the previous year in that year.

When two vehicles going in opposite directions hit head-on, it is known as a head-on collision. This type of collision frequently ends in significant injuries, if not death.

Head-on accidents are extremely deadly. Collisions that collide head-on generate a lot of energy. Because of the higher energy, fatalities are more likely in this type of accident.

Driver error is to blame for the great majority of head-on collisions. Lane departure accidents and wrong-way accidents are the two forms of head-on crashes. A vehicle straying into oncoming traffic is known as a lane departure accident. In contrast, a vehicle turning the wrong way onto a one-way street or joining a freeway in the opposite direction is known as a wrong-way accident.

Although head-on collisions account for only 2% of all accidents, they account for 10% of all fatalities on American roads. Drivers who are distracted or tired are more likely to have a head-on accident.
