Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The number of people killed in car crashes decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, according to data provided by the Governors Highway Safety Association. The tragic number of pedestrian deaths, however, increased by 27 percent over this time period.

There is little to no doubt that pedestrians will face an ever-increasing risk of serious or fatal injuries in the coming years in the United States based on these statistics.

In 2012, there were 809 deaths and approximately 14,000 injuries due to car accidents. These statistics show that pedestrians in California face a substantially higher probability of suffering serious injuries or death as a result of a traffic collision than pedestrians in any other U.S. state.

In 2016, almost 6,000 people in the United States were killed in motor vehicle crashes. With 88 deaths every minute, the year ended on a bleak note. A total of over 137,000 people are expected to be hospitalized every year in the United States as a direct result of traffic-related incidents.
