Wrong-Way Collision Statistics

According to a recent AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety report, there were 2,008 fatalities from wrong-way incidents on divided highways between 2015 and 2018, an average of 500 deaths per year. These figures are up 34% from the 375 deaths per year observed between 2010 and 2014.

Because of habit and instruction, most California drivers drive on the right side of the road. In most circumstances, driving on the left side of the road feels strange and inappropriate. We do, however, encounter wrong-way drivers in our region.

In California, 37 people are killed each year due to wrong-way driving. Almost all of the wrong-way drivers who cause these accidents are intoxicated or severely impaired. The majority of such events occur in the left lane and involve a head-on collision with a vehicle or cars driving in the proper direction.

These collisions are caused by a range of factors, including distracted driving, drunk driving, and driver weariness.
