Millions of people are injured in car accidents on American highways every year, and tens of thousands of drivers and passengers are murdered. A multi-vehicle collision occurs when three or more vehicles crash on the road. A “chain-reaction” crash occurs when one vehicle collides with another, potentially causing it to collide with other vehicles on the road.

According to a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), multi-vehicle incidents involving passenger cars resulted in more than 13,000 fatalities each year, accounting for more than 40% of motor vehicle accidents.

Low visibility under specific driving situations affecting vehicle operators, roadways that have grown congested due to high traffic volumes, bad road conditions, and other factors are common causes of these incidents.
