Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

Multi-vehicle collisions can happen to anyone, anytime. You’re driving along, minding your own business, when the next thing you know, you’re in the center of a multi-vehicle pile-up.

Multi-vehicle accidents are among the most fatal and devastating types of drivers. Victims of these incidents can rarely walk away from them without their lives being irreversibly impacted, typically for the worse.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), there were over 200 deaths in Washington State in 2018 due to multi-vehicle incidents. The proportion of total accidents involving two or more vehicles was 40%.

While this percentage may appear low, multi-vehicle crashes account for a disproportionate number of traffic deaths, accounting for up to 25% in some jurisdictions. This is because such mishaps can be extremely deadly for sufferers. A single car is frequently struck more than once, from different directions, and at varying speeds.

These types of accidents are often caused by drunk driving, speeding, and being distracted while driving, among other things.
