What To Do After A Hit-And-Run Accident

If you’re hurt in a crash where the driver leaves the scene and you can still move, taking some steps can greatly improve your chances of getting compensation. These steps help authorities find the driver and also support your claim for damages. Here are the suggested steps:

  • Go to a safe place. If you can, move yourself or your car to a safe place to prevent more accidents or injuries.
  • Stay at the location and check that everyone is fine. Make sure you are not hurt before checking if anyone else is. Stay cool, and don’t accept blame.
  • Gather as much information as you can at the accident scene. Based on your situation, you may be able to obtain the car’s license plate number, as well as its make, model, and color.
  • Call the police. The sooner you tell the officials about the accident, the faster they can arrest the driver. The cops will make an official report of the accident that can help you when you file a claim later.
  • Collect the names and contact details of witnesses. They can confirm what happened and support your case.
  • Visit a doctor right away to check for any injuries. Getting medical help also creates a record of your injuries. Follow your doctor’s treatment plan to get better.
  • Contact your insurance company. Report only the facts and don’t assign blame or accept responsibility. Don’t give a recording statement or accept a settlement offer without talking to a lawyer first.
  • Consult with our experienced hit-and-run accident attorneys. They can help you navigate the legal process and maximize your monetary compensation.
