Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

The number of car accidents in the United States has climbed in recent years. In 2018, there were an estimated 33,654 fatal car accidents. A total of 36,560 people were killed in automobile accidents.

A broadside collision is an automobile accident that occurs when the front of one vehicle collides with the side of another vehicle at high speed. Broadside collisions are also sometimes called T-bone collisions and side-impact collisions.

According to the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration, T-bone collisions kill approximately 8,000 people in the United States each year.

Most side-impact collisions happen at junctions because a perpendicular flow of cars creates the ideal situation for one to collide into the side of another.

When victims survive a major side collision, they frequently suffer from serious and catastrophic injuries, as well as car accident PTSD. When there is a vehicle mismatch, and one vehicle is much larger, taller, or heavier than the other, the severity of the injury increases.

Passengers in the most severe side-impact incidents suffer severe head trauma, including traumatic brain injury. They are also subjected to upper body trauma, resulting in spinal cord damage and internal organ damage.
