Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bicyclists are particularly sensitive to road hazards. According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration, around 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle incidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of traffic fatalities.

Bicycle accidents frequently occur in urban areas, where cars and bicycles interact the most. Cars colliding with bicycles are the main cause of bicyclist injuries and deaths across the state.

Drivers failing to cede the right of way, running a stop sign or red light, not paying enough attention to the road, and texting while driving are common causes. Drunk or careless driving might potentially result in a tragic bicycle crash.

According to US News & World Report, 17 cyclists were killed on Los Angeles highways in 2015, compared to 21 in 2018. This is an almost 25% increase. Pedestrian fatalities increased by more than half during the same time.

Bicycle accidents are common in Los Angeles due to the city’s extensive road infrastructure. New technology, such as ride-sharing services and electric scooters, has resulted in more road users and confounding traffic and parking patterns.
