Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

Congestion is a major issue on American roadways, which rank towards the top of the world’s worst traffic rankings. There are roughly 280 million registered automobiles in the country, with 227.5 million individuals driving them daily.

San Francisco is one of the country’s few cities with major thoroughfares. Because of the city’s unique terrain, arterial thoroughfares are high-capacity urban roads.

This, however, has the potential to cause significant traffic jams and heavy congestion on San Francisco’s streets. According to mobility data from the San Francisco-Oakland area, there is an average of 6.6 hours of “congested time” on the streets, resulting in an annual total delay of 78 hours per peak vehicle commuter (per person).

According to the San Francisco government’s records, around 227 documented road fatalities in San Francisco between 2014 and 2019. Even though San Francisco established the “Vision Zero” policy in 2014, traffic accidents are still unavoidable.

Multiple-vehicle accidents are one example of this. A “multi-vehicle collision” occurs when three or more vehicles collide. A “chain-reaction” crash happens when two automobiles meet, causing one to collide with the other on the roadway.

According to a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study, more than 13,000 people were killed in multi-vehicle collisions involving passenger automobiles, accounting for more than 40% of motor vehicle accidents each year.
