Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

Based on the NHTSA statistics, police reported over 5.2 million car accidents in the United States in 2020. Thirty percent of these crashes (1.6 million) resulted in injuries, while fewer than 1% (35,766) resulted in fatalities.

It is estimated that the number of fatal crashes increased by 6.8 percent between 2019 and 2020, with the fatality rate rising to 1.34 deaths per 100 million cars traveled in 2020. Compared to 2019, in 2020, there were 79 injured people per 100 million vehicles driven.

In traffic accidents, drivers (67%) are the most common victims, followed by passengers (24%), motorcyclists (4%), pedestrians (3%), and cyclists (2%).

In a multiple-vehicle collision, three or more cars are involved in a chain of events. An accident can involve up to six vehicles becoming entangled in the wreckage.

Multi-vehicle accidents are more likely to cause fatalities, serious injuries, and property damage than single-vehicle accidents. There is an increased risk of injury for those nearby if you lose control or have poor situational awareness. Such collisions are more likely to occur in most cases.
