Truck Accident Statistics

Because semis are considerably larger and heavier than passenger vehicles, their occupants are less likely to suffer severe injuries in the event of an accident. Because of this, heavy trucks cause far more fatalities in traffic accidents than any other vehicle type. When these big rigs get into accidents, it may be disastrous for everyone involved.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 4,965 people were killed in incidents involving large trucks in the United States in 2020. This was a drop of 1% from 2019’s total of 5,032. Seventy-one percent of the people killed in large-truck crashes in 2020 were not truck occupants but rather occupants in smaller cars.

In 2020, large trucks accounted for 8.9% of fatally involved vehicles across the country. The state of California had the highest number of deaths caused by heavy truck accidents involving non-occupant vehicles (90). Only two other states, Texas and Florida, had more than 50 victims in big truck accidents.
