E-Bike Crash Statistics

Instead of being propelled by the rider’s pedaling, an e-bike includes an electric motor and rechargeable batteries, unlike a typical bicycle.

Every e-bike is different in terms of the placement and power of the motor, and batteries normally need to be recharged after a distance of 20 to 100 miles. How an e-bike is operated determines the variety of models available; some require pedaling, while others don’t.

A total of 190,000 E.R. visits and at least 71 deaths have been reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) between 2017 and 2020.

The number of e-bike-related injuries has also increased, with 34,000 hospitalizations in 2017 and 57,800 in 2020.

The same factors frequently cause accidents involving bicycles and e-bikes. Someone else’s careless actions cause most motorized bicycle accidents. A significant majority of e-bike accidents are caused by drivers that fail to follow traffic laws and aren’t aware of riders.

Vehicle problems are another common reason for e-bike mishaps. Potholes, misplaced construction plates, grates, road hardware, pits, and other hazards that should not be present in locations where e-bikes are used are examples of unsafe faults.
