Several injuries were reported following a multi-vehicle traffic collision in Sonora on Tuesday afternoon, February 8, 2022.
The major collision transpired at approximately 1:08 p.m. in the area of Highway 49 at Old Sonora Columbia Road.
Three vehicles were involved in the collision. A 1987 Pontiac Fiero reportedly rear-ended a stopped silver Lexus ES 300 on Highway 49.
The impact caused the Lexus to crash into an orange Subaru AWD Crosstrek. The Lexus overturned on top of the two vehicles following the collision.
The Pontiac driver sustained minor injuries while the Subaru driver declined medical treatment. Two Columbia college students in the Lexus were also hurt but were not hospitalized.

Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
A collision involving multiple vehicles is referred to as a “multi-vehicle accident.” When six or more vehicles are involved, this is considered a “pileup” accident.
Multi-vehicle accidents are more likely to happen when the visibility of the road is affected by fog, rain, or snow. Consequently, motorists need to be especially cautious and on the lookout. Drivers may be uninformed of the dangers of the roads.
More than 13,000 people die each year in multi-vehicle collisions involving passenger vehicles, accounting for more than 40% of all motor vehicle deaths.
Multi-vehicle incidents are far more lethal than ordinary two-vehicle collisions. In part, this is because multiple vehicles may strike the same target from different directions at once. Each subsequent vehicle’s impact can bend steel and cause fuel to spill out.
Intoxicated or distracted driving and speeding or being distracted while driving is the primary causes of these accidents.
