Head-On Collision Statistics

One of the most dangerous types of car accidents is a head-on collision. A head-on collision has a substantially higher impact force than other forms of car accidents.

The vehicles’ speed and weight influence the force of impact in a head-on collision. Tremendous energy is generated during head-on collisions—the more energy there is, the more severe the injuries are.

Front-seat occupants are frequently the ones who suffer the most serious injuries in a head-on collision. Mechanical components of an automobile may penetrate the passenger compartment during a significant crash. The weight and impact of the metal can easily break or crush the legs, hips, and lower torso of a driver or passenger.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, frontal impact crashes killed 58 percent of car occupants in 2017. A head-on accident is more likely to occur in rural settings.

Head-on collisions account for 13% of all fatal crashes in rural regions. There are only a few head-on crashes in cities, accounting for fewer than 7% of fatalities.
