Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

A multi-vehicle accident is a collision involving several vehicles. A collision is considered a “pileup” when six or more vehicles are involved in the accident.

When visibility is reduced by weather conditions like fog, rain, or snow, multi-vehicle accidents are more likely to occur. As a result, motorists must exercise additional caution and focus. Drivers may not be aware of the dangers of driving on the roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, a whopping 13,000 people are killed in multi-vehicle collisions each year; this accounts for more than 40% of all traffic fatalities.

There isn’t much time for drivers to avoid hitting cars in front of them in many collisions. For the most part, panicked drivers slam on the brakes too late and end up sliding into other lanes.

Swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid an accident might lead to an awful chain reaction and an even bigger pileup. A multi-car collision is one of the most lethal on the road; therefore, it comes as no surprise.
