[02-10-2023] Elderly Woman Killed in Car vs. SMART Train Crash in NovatoAn 83-year-old female driver was killed following a vehicle collision with a SMART train in Novato, Marin County, on Friday morning, February 10, 2023.

According to the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, the fatal crash occurred at about 11:20 a.m. near Hamilton Parkway, where the train was heading south.

Novato Police said the vehicle was traveling east on Hamilton when it crossed beneath the lowered crossing arms that allowed the train to pass. A police officer in the area heard the collision, located the car, and attempted to assist the driver. Despite this, she was killed.

SMART rail line confirmed there was no one hurt among the 28 passengers and crew on the train. The passengers were placed on buses to continue their journeys.

Hamilton Parkway was closed between the Novato Skate Park and Nave Drive for several hours. The probe was taken over by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division.
