[02-11-2022] Los Angeles County, CA – 10-Month-Old Baby Sustained Skull Fracture After LAPD Officer Tackles Hit-and-Run Suspect Near Long Beach Avenue

According to authorities, a 10-month-old baby was left with a skull fracture after an LAPD officer tackled his father to the ground, and police are reviewing the use of force following a hit-and-run crash and pursuit Friday last month, February 11.

[02-11-2022] Los Angeles County, CA - 10-Month-Old Baby Sustained Skull Fracture After LAPD Officer Tackles Hit-and-Run Suspect Near Long Beach AvenueAccording to Capt. Stacy Spell, a police spokesman, the incident began around 11:21 p.m. as gang enforcement officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Newton Division were completing a traffic stop near 55th Street and Long Beach Avenue.

According to Spell, the officers noticed a silver Jeep Wrangler with tinted windows being driven erratically and moved closer to the vehicle to keep an eye on it.

According to the captain, the Jeep’s driver, Josue H., a 25-year-old Los Angeles resident, was involved in a serious traffic collision with a large flatbed truck.

According to Spell, officers arrived at the scene, but Huerta drove away, sparking an 11-minute chase.

In-car camera footage from the pursuit, released by the LAPD on Monday, shows damage to the Jeep’s side and rear right tires, which were off their rims by the time Huerta came to a halt, jumped out of the SUV and began running down a path.

Officers can be seen briefly checking inside the Jeep on in-car camera footage before running after Huerta on foot.
Several officers can be seen chasing Huerta down the path on body camera footage.

Huerta is tackled onto a lawn after the officer calls out to him to stop. According to Spell, the suspect was holding a 10-month-old infant who was unknown to any of the officers.

After the officer tackled them, Huerta’s baby can be heard crying on the body camera video.

Before others flip Huerta onto his stomach and handcuff him, one of the officers takes the baby from his father.

At the scene, firefighters examined Huerta. Spell stated that he was not hurt.

According to the captain, the child was taken to a local hospital and treated for a small skull fracture on the right side of his head.

Cocaine and fentanyl were also found in the child’s system.

According to Spell, the infant was admitted to the hospital for further testing before being released to his mother.
The cause of the baby’s injury has yet to be determined.

According to Spell, because the use of force cannot be ruled out as the cause of the injury, the incident is being investigated as a categorical use of force incident.

According to Spell, the investigation is still in its early stages, which can take up to a year.

At the scene, investigators discovered drugs, three unloaded 9mm magazines, and a large sum of money, he said.

According to the captain, Huerta was charged on February 15 with felony child abuse, evading, and possessing narcotics for sale.

He was also charged with hit-and-run as a misdemeanor.

Head Injury Statistics

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), brain damage, head trauma, or concussion are all terms for traumatic brain injury. Victims and their families often bear a heavy physical, psychological, and financial burden as a result.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), three million people are treated in the emergency room each year for head injuries. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a person’s head is subjected to a traumatic force, such as a blow to the head.

If the injured part of the brain is severely damaged, a traumatic brain injury can range from mild (a concussion) to severe (TBI). Only a small percentage of TBIs are severe enough to cause long periods of unconsciousness and other neurologic changes that may last a lifetime, whereas most TBIs are mild.

One of the most difficult injuries to comprehend is a traumatic brain injury because each person’s thought processes are unique.

A person’s thoughts, feelings, and self-image are all stored in the brain, which serves as the foundation of their personality and interactions with the world around them. A traumatic brain injury affects each person differently, and the effects can range from mild to profound.
