Fatal Semi-Truck Accident Statistics

A semi-truck is only one of the many names for the big commercial lorries that clog our highways and byways. Other terms for a large rig include an 18-wheeler, a tractor-trailer, and a semi-trailer truck.

Semi-trucks play an important role in our economy. The trucking industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that turns over massive profits. However, it must adhere to strict rules and regulations to help keep everyone on our road system safe. When the industry chooses to cut safety corners to keep up with demand and improve their bottom line, they endanger motorists everywhere.

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, large rig truck fatalities have increased by 30 percent since 2009. In 2017, there were 4,102 traffic fatalities involving a large rig.

Tractor-trailer collisions are caused by various circumstances, including truck loss of control, tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling vehicle malfunction, excessive speed, lane drifting, inappropriate truck maneuvering, and driver over-fatigue.
