Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

According to the NHTSA, over 5.2 million automobile accidents occurred in the United States in 2020. Fewer than 1% (35,766) of these collisions resulted in fatalities, while 30% (1.6 million) resulted in injuries.

Fatal collisions increased by 6.8% between 2019 and 2020, reaching 1.34 per 100 million cars driven. Compared to 2019, the injury rate decreased by 6.0 percent to 79 incidents per 100 million miles in 2020.

Drivers (67%), passengers (24%), motorcyclists (4%), pedestrians (3%), and pedal cyclists (2%) were the most common victims of traffic accidents.

Three or more drivers collide in a series of incidents, resulting in a multiple-vehicle crash. Up to six vehicles may become tangled in the wreckage after an accident.

Unlike traffic accidents, multi-vehicle crashes typically result in fatalities, serious injuries, and property damage. Those nearby could be hurt if you lose control or exhibit poor situational awareness. The probability of these collisions is typically higher.

What To Do Following an Accident

It is a good idea to file a police report after gathering the necessary information, assuming it is secure. Thus, the police can store accident information on a central database, keep those records on file in the police department, and store the data safely.

In any case, the police will frequently arrive at the scene of an accident, but in the unlikely event that they don’t, you can contact your local police by phone or in-person to file an accident report. In this way, even if the police are not present at the scene of the collision, they will still gather the necessary data and issue a report after the fact.
