Big Rig Accident Statistics

The trucking industry is a multibillion-dollar business with significant profits. However, it must adhere to tight rules and regulations to keep everyone on our roadways safe. Businesses that cut on safety to fulfill demand and earn profits imperil motorists worldwide.

In this case, a jackknife accident occurred. A “jackknife accident” refers to one in which a large truck begins to skid. The trailer swings away from the truck, causing the trailer to fold across the highway (like a jackknife). These accidents often lead to severe traffic congestion because the trailer can block many traffic lanes and be especially difficult to remove.

Truck accidents result in some of the most serious injuries of any motor accident. This is due to the increased size and weight of a truck in a collision, which generates more force than smaller, lighter vehicles. The greater the force created in a collision, the more severe the injuries are likely to be. Many of the injuries are fatal.

Someone gets killed in a semi-truck accident somewhere in the United States every 15 minutes. In 2015, approximately 4,000 tractor-trailer-related deaths occurred in the United States, according to the United States Department of Transportation.

Semi-truck accident fatalities increased by a shocking 22% between 2009 and 2015. In 2015, a tractor-trailer involved around 11% of all fatal traffic accidents.

Big rigs are the primary means of freight transportation in California, according to the California Department of Transportation. More than 78% of California residents rely primarily on huge trucks to convey their stuff.
