[02-13-2023] Merced County, CA – One Person Injured in Ballico Two-Vehicle Collision

One person was hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision in the census-designated place of Ballico in Merced County on Monday morning, February 13, 2023.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash where one car rolled over occurred at about 8:36 a.m. at the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Ballico Avenue.

50-year-old Winton resident Carlos R. was traveling east on Santa Fe in his 1998 Toyota Tacoma as he approached the intersection at Ballico Ave and slowed his car. Tyler E. from Turlock, driving a Chevrolet Cruze at roughly 70 mph, struck the Toyota from behind.

The Toyota veered to the right and struck a parked trailer while the Chevrolet rolled over several times. The Toyota driver was reportedly not wearing a seat belt. After the collision, he slipped into and out of consciousness.

Carlos was transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center for sustaining major injuries. The Chevrolet driver did not report any wounds.

According to CHP officials, speed is thought to have contributed to the crash, which is still under investigation.

Two-Vehicle Accident Statistics

In 2020, there were 3,847 fatalities due to automobile accidents in California. Of the total crashes, 1,587 (41%) people were killed when two or more vehicles collided, while 2,260 (59%) people were killed in single-vehicle accidents. Deaths occurred in 1,378 cars (36%), 674 in SUVs/pickups (18%), 25 in large trucks (1%), 539 in motorbikes (14%), 986 among pedestrians (26%), and 129 bicyclists (3%).

While accidents involving two or more vehicles accounted for less than half of all traffic fatalities, they caused the vast majority of injuries (77% overall) and wreck injuries (71% overall). Nearly 8,000 people were killed or injured due to angle collisions, according to estimates.
