According to the California Highway Patrol, the head-on collision occurred at about 6:10 a.m. along Highway 29 near Ehlers Lane, north of St. Helena.

The crash involved a northbound 2020 Toyota C-HR that veered onto the east shoulder before hitting a barrier and crossing the center line directly into a southbound 2006 Hyundai Sonata.

The Hyundai driver, 75-year-old Calistoga resident Jose T., sustained major injuries, while the Toyota driver, 53-year-old St. Helena resident Ali K., had moderate wounds. Both were sent to Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center by American Medical Response.

The collision resulted in the closure of Highway 29 for almost an hour. The investigation by the authorities into the cause continued.
