Single-Vehicle Crash Statistics

The percentage of fatalities caused by single-vehicle accidents rose to 60% from 2019 to 2020. Four-thirds of those involved were hurt. Common factors contributing to these mishaps include intoxicated driving, excessive speed, and drivers trying to shield their passengers.

Most car accidents involve a collision between two or more vehicles or an impact between a driver and another object. Car accidents can be devastating in any circumstance, often leading to fatalities.

Due to the unparalleled accessibility available in the USA, getting around is easiest with a personal vehicle. Five people are hurt in traffic accidents every minute, and someone loses their life every fifteen minutes.

You can lessen the likelihood of these incidents by always using your seatbelt, paying close attention, and staying undistracted. Everyone runs the risk of being seriously injured or killed in a car crash, regardless of the precautions taken.

How to Obtain a Police Report After an Accident in California

California law requires that every driver report a serious accident, death, or property damage that exceeds $1,000 to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within ten (10) days after the accident occurs. Under California Vehicle Code Section 20008, accidents involving injuries or fatalities must be reported to the California Highway Patrol or the responding police department within 24 hours.

There are two ways for people to submit their DMV and California Highway Patrol reports:

  1. It is usually necessary to call the police when an accident occurs. The police will give you a report, investigate, and provide it to the DMV and CHP on your behalf.
  2. You can also submit the report to the CHP and DMV. If this is the case, you must complete the forms and submit them as soon as possible to the appropriate offices.
