Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, approximately 680,000 people are hurt or killed in hit-and-run accidents each year in the United States. Recent studies indicate a rise in fatal hit-and-run accidents. Accidents caused 24% of all pedestrian deaths in 2020.

According to studies, California has the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. There were 893 pedestrian fatalities and almost 14,000 injuries in California in 2012.

When two vehicles collide, one of them leaves the scene without calling for help. As a result of frequent neglect or insufficient medical attention, hit-and-run accident victims may experience worsening effects and increased suffering.

Pedestrians can be killed or injured by drivers who abruptly stop or fail to yield to pedestrians.

Pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible to prevent injuries, abstain from using alcohol and drugs, and exercise caution when crossing parking lots and driveways.

What Should I Do After an Accident?

The best course of action following a car accident is to stop. Punishment for leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid is severe. If anyone is hurt or killed in an accident and the police or CHP are not on the scene, they must be called immediately. In the event that the driver is unable to, any passenger in the vehicle must notify the authorities or the California Highway Patrol of the collision.

If there are no casualties, you should pull over to the side of the road. Vehicles that are immobilized and remain on a public road or highway may be impounded by law enforcement.
