Truck Accident Statistics

Heavy trucks offer more safety in collisions than smaller cars do because of their robust construction. Because of this, the largest number of people killed in traffic accidents are passengers in smaller cars. Collisions with trucks could have catastrophic consequences.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 4,965 persons were killed in collisions involving heavy trucks in the United States in 2020. There was a 1% decrease from 2019’s total of 5,032. People in passenger vehicles accounted for 71% of those killed when huge trucks were the cause of the collisions.

Heavy trucks accounted for 8.9 percent of all vehicles in fatal accidents in 2020 nationwide. Occupants in smaller cars perished in heavy truck collisions in California (90). Texas and Florida are the only other states that recorded at least 50 deaths among car occupants in crashes with trucks.
