One person was killed while two others were injured after a stolen Amazon truck crashed into a building at the intersection of 48th and Main Streets on Thursday afternoon, February 17, 2022.
The crash happened at approximately 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of 48th and Main Streets.
An Amazon vehicle was stolen during delivery at Woodland Avenue for unclear reasons. The suspect then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into several parked cars about a half-mile away.
The Amazon vehicle then crashed into a building, hitting three people in the process. One man was pinned between the vehicle and the building.
Authorities were already pursuing the suspect. The suspect was not wearing an Amazon uniform.
Two people sustained minor injuries. Unfortunately, a 57-year-old man was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene; he was a food vendor.
The driver initially tried to escape by jumping out of the truck and running away, but a witness immediately alerted authorities.
The suspect was then taken into custody. The identities of the involved parties have not been disclosed. Local authorities are further investigating the case.
Reckless Driving Statistics
Traffic violations and safety regulations can help drivers avoid collisions. Careless and reckless drivers cause the majority of traffic accidents.
Every day in the United States, someone is injured in an accident. When you consider that 143 million people drive to and from work every day, this makes sense. In the United States, there are an estimated 6 million car accidents each year, and 90 people are killed in car accidents every day.
More than a third of the 13,000 people who die in fatal car accidents each year do so due to careless or impaired driving. Reckless driving accounts for 30 percent of all car accidents. About 20% of car accident injuries are caused by distracted driving.
More than 20,000 vehicle-into-building collisions occur in the United States each year, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Storefront Safety Council. This equates to 50 to 60 mishaps per day.
