Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

Motorcycle accidents nearly always endanger the rider more than the other people involved. So why is it so dangerous to ride a motorcycle? Many factors contribute to this shockingly high death rate.

The most basic problem is a lack of protection. While vehicle occupants are shielded from the force of impact by seat belts, airbags, and the vehicle’s steel frame, motorcycle riders usually absorb the full force of impact from a collision directly into their bodies.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to be killed in a crash than car passengers. According to the NHTSA, roughly 5,286 motorcyclists were murdered in the United States in 2016.

Unfortunately, motorcycle riders are not safe in California. California has one of the most significant registered motorbike populations in the United States. In California, there are over 800,000 registered motorcycles. In 2017, there were 16,505 motorcycle incidents on California roads, resulting in 15,527 injuries and 541 deaths.

Helmets can help prevent serious head injuries. Helmets are thought to be 37% effective in reducing motorcycle fatalities. The remainder of their body, on the other hand, may still be vulnerable.
