Two people were killed following a deadly head-on crash involving a wrong-way driver in Cerritos on early Friday morning, February 18, 2022.

[02-18-2022] Los Angeles County, CA - Two People Killed After a Deadly Head-On Collision in CerritosThe fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:18 a.m. on the southbound  Freeway near South Street in Cerritos.

A 2021 Hyundai Elantra was stopped on the freeway when the driver made a U-turn and began driving northbound. It then collided head-on with an oncoming southbound 2017 Honda Civic.

Due to the severity of the impact, both vehicles caught fire following the collision. A passerby reportedly stopped and pulled one of the drivers out of their car.

The passerby performed CPR on the Honda Civic driver, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as 26-year-old Alyssa R.

The other driver was also pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been disclosed.

The California Highway Patrol is further investigating the case.

Fatal Head-On Crash Statistics

A head-on collision occurs when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions crash directly into each other. Although head-on collisions account for only 2% of all accidents, they account for 10% of all fatalities on U.S. highways. The accident was thought to have been caused by excessive speed.
