Rear-End Crash Statistics

A rear-end collision is one of the most common types of car accidents. Apart from that, they are exceedingly dangerous. These crashes are more likely to occur when one vehicle is stationary, and the other is moving at high speeds.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rear-end crashes account for 28% of all highway collisions (NHTSA).

Each year, rear-end collisions cause around 950,000 injuries and 2,000 deaths, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Rear-end collisions are among the most common forms of car accidents in California. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), there were 118,029 drivers involved in rear-end incidents that resulted in injuries and 405 drivers involved in rear-end collisions that resulted in fatalities in 2011.

All rear-end collisions have one thing in common: negligence. In short, blame is obvious if the striking motorist acted negligently and collided with another vehicle. The second driver may have been stopped at a stop sign or light or slowed down in traffic, and the striking driver was careless and failed to stop safely.
