Fatal Head-On Collision Statistics

Car accidents are getting increasingly common in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 33,654 fatal car accidents killed 36,560 people in 2018.

In 2017, Riverside alone recorded 2,119 injuries and deaths from motor vehicle accidents on surface streets, including Jurupa Avenue, Wells Avenue, Pierce Street, and, more commonly, neighboring freeways like the 91, 215, and 60. A head-on collision occurred in this case.

When two cars going in opposing directions hit head-on, this is referred to as a “head-on collision.” Even at modest speeds, the consequences of these collisions can be life-threatening or fatal.

Head-on collisions occur at traffic lights, stop signs, blind intersections, and highways. Head-on collisions at junctions are more prevalent because drivers violate traffic restrictions such as red lights or stop signs.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 58 percent of car occupants perished in head-on incidents in 2017. In rural locations, head-on collisions are more probable. Head-on collisions are responsible for 13% of all rural fatalities. In the meantime, head-on crashes account for less than 7 percent of fatal mishaps in cities.

Drunk driving, distracted driving, inexperience, and even technical failure contribute to head-on collisions.
