Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

In a multi-vehicle collision, three or more vehicles collide. In many cases, they are caused by a “chain reaction” of collisions, in which one car hits another, which then hits other vehicles.

Collisions with other vehicles can have a devastating effect on people’s lives. Because car accidents are so common, most people don’t think about how dangerous and deadly they can be until it’s too late.

On the nation’s highways, tens of thousands of people are killed or injured every year. According to the report, fatal car accidents claimed the lives of 33,654 people last year. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis System (FARS) recorded 36,560 deaths in 2018.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS), multi-vehicle collisions account for less than 10% of all accidents in any given year.
