Motorcycle Accident Statistics

In 2012, there were around 8.5 million lawfully registered motorbikes on US highways, according to the US Department of Transportation. Motorcycles appeal to a wide spectrum of people for the excitement and freedom they bring, in addition to their portability and lower prices.

The Insurance Information Institute has released some startling statistics about the severity of motorcycle accidents in the United States. In 2018, about 5,000 people were killed in motorbike accidents.

While this was a 5% decrease from 2017, motorcyclists were still 27 times more likely to die in a car collision than passenger vehicle occupants per mile driven.

Road rash, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and bone fractures are common injuries suffered by motorcycle riders in accidents.

So, what makes riding a motorcycle so dangerous? A variety of variables contribute to this startlingly high fatality rate. The most fundamental issue is a lack of protection. While seat belts, airbags, and the vehicle’s steel structure protect vehicle occupants from the power of an impact, motorbike riders typically absorb the whole energy of an impact directly into their bodies.
