Plane Accident Statistics

Air travel is faster and safer than driving or using the train, yet airline crashes often result in fatalities or serious injuries for the people on board. Planes often crash for various reasons, including equipment failures, design defects, subpar repair or maintenance, pilot error, or breakdowns in air traffic control, rather than just plummeting to the ground.

Even though airline crashes are rarer than car or train collisions, they happen more frequently than you might expect. The number of aviation mishaps in the United States alone reached over 1,500 in 2012.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the number of deaths in plane crashes rose from 395 in 2018 to 452 in 2019. A total of 452 persons lost their lives in the event of an accident in 2019. Four persons died as a result of commercial aviation travel.

Even though plane crashes frequently result in serious injury or death, persons injured or killed due to the accident are entitled to financial compensation.
