Bus Accident Statistics

Various FMCSA and California laws apply to the commercial transportation business, and buses are no exception. Because buses are hired vehicles, they fall within the definition of “common carriers.” Under California law, common carriers are expected to provide a higher level of care than other types of motorists.

As a result, there is an increased danger of injury or death for those who use public transportation due to blatant disregard for the road rules by bus operators and drivers alike.

There are an average of 60,000 bus accidents in the United States each year. Hundreds of people are killed, and many more are injured in these accidents, even though most result in minor property damage. Approximately 14,000 people are injured in these crashes, according to researchers.

According to a National Safety Council (NSC) study released in 2018, 117 people were killed in school bus accidents. Meanwhile, approximately 277 people were killed while 3,939 people were injured in California.

The research found that bus and truck collisions killed 277 individuals and wounded 3,939 more in California.
