Rear-End Crash Statistics

When one vehicle collides with the car in front of it, it is called a rear-end collision. Because the leading driver cannot always prevent a collision, a rear-end collision is frequently (but not always) the fault of the driver in the rear position.

According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration, rear-end collisions account for around 29 percent of all serious injury traffic accidents in the United States.

In the United States, there are about 1.7 million rear-end collisions each year. In these roughly 2 million occurrences, approximately 1,700 people are murdered, and another 500,000 are injured.

Rear-end collisions are one of California’s most common forms of automobile accidents. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), there were 118,029 injuries and 405 deaths in rear-end collisions in 2011.

The most prevalent causes of rear-end collisions include distracted driving, tailgating, reckless driving, and driving while impaired or intoxicated.
