Truck Accident Statistics

Large trucks, by definition, operate differently than smaller vehicles. They have wider turning radiuses, slower stopping speeds, and a tendency to roll over. Inadequate driver training, a lack of skill, and improperly maintained trucks can lead to disastrous accidents.

According to the National Safety Council, nearly five thousand trucks were involved in fatal accidents in the United States in 2018. This statistic was a staggering 51 percent increase from 2009 (when fewer miles were traveled on American roads in the wake of the mortgage crisis of 2008).

California has one of the highest rates of truck accidents. In 2019, 3,316 fatal crashes resulted in 3,606 deaths. There were 320 fatal large truck crashes, and occupants of large trucks accounted for 44 of those fatalities.

A variety of factors lead to large truck accidents. Often professional truck drivers feel pressure to make their deliveries as quickly as possible, and they must operate under strict deadlines. This causes them to cut corners regarding federal regulations and safety. A tired or careless truck driver behind the wheel of a vehicle that weighs 20 times more than the other vehicles on the road is a recipe for disaster.
