A football star at Warren High School identified as Jaylon C. in Downey was killed in a horrific crash in Santa Fe Springs Saturday last month, March 5, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were dispatched to the crash shortly before 10:50 p.m. on the southbound 5 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs, just north of the 605 Freeway.
Dajon H., 17, was driving a Nissan southbound when it veered to the right and crashed into a raised asphalt curb, according to CHP investigators.
The Nissan then veered off the road and collided with a metal light pole, rolling over several times and down a dirt embankment.
According to investigators, the two passengers were ejected from the Nissan.
Connish, a Carson resident, was one of three passengers in the vehicle.
Hancox was the only one wearing a seatbelt inside the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Ground ambulances were used to transport Hancox, Connish, and an unidentified second passenger to St. Francis Medical Center.
Medical staff pronounced Connish dead at the hospital, and the second passenger was unconscious when CHP officers arrived.
Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash Statistics
Single-vehicle accidents are among California’s most dangerous, but many drivers are unaware of this.
According to the NHTSA, 62% of all fatal car accidents in California involve just one vehicle. Drivers in California, where single-vehicle accidents are all too common, need to be aware of the many contributing factors.
A wide range of factors can cause a single-vehicle collision. It is common for a single-car accident to occur if the driver is speeding or making sharp turns on a wet or slippery road and loses control. The road may also be littered with debris, such as a large branch or something that fell off a truck.
In the event of a single-car accident caused by something other than your or another driver’s negligence, such as a deer jumping in front of your vehicle, the comprehensive coverage plan of your insurance policy will likely limit your recovery.
Los Angeles County Car Accident Lawyers
Because of their injuries, many car accident victims are unable to return to work or school. Negligent drivers are not exonerated from responsibility even if a victim dies as a result of their actions. Victim’s family members can file wrongful death lawsuits against the negligent driver who caused their loved one’s death (or legal heirs).
For them, the process of reliving their losses and grief is a painful one. Depositions and trials force victims to testify about their losses in front of strangers. One’s mental health can take a significant toll during the course of a lengthy legal battle.
It is critical to hold negligent drivers accountable if they cause an accident. Accountability is critical in cases where negligence results in an excessive death toll. While wrongful death claims can be emotionally draining, they can also provide a measure of closure for the families of those who have died. This is a win-win situation for everyone on California’s roads.
